Buku yang Memotivasi Anak Bodoh
Ketika Mas Dhita Kurniawan, salah seorang editor PT. Tiga Serangkai (Tiga Ananda) menawarkan menulis buku anak-anak dengan tema, “Kumpulan Kisah Anak Bodoh yang Akhirnya Jadi Orang Sukses,” penuh antusias aku menyambutnya. Usulan Mas Dhita pada surelnya menyebutkan begini, “Buku yang berupa kumpulan cerita dari tokoh-tokoh sukses terkenal yang dulunya dikenal bodoh. Diharapkan, buku ini menjadi motivasi anak bodoh (dalam hal akademik) untuk nantinya menjadi orang sukses.” Wah, buku yang sangat menarik untuk ditulis apalagi bertujuan sangat mulia.
Yap, bukankah masih banyak anak-anak “dicap” bodoh hanya karena tidak bisa mencapai rangking 10 besar di kelas, masih ada anak-anak yang dimarahi orang tua atau mendapat ejekan ketika nilai rapornya anjlok, dan parahnya anak-anak tersebut merasa bahwa dirinya memang bodoh, lalu bersikap inferior karena perlakuan lingkungan yang menganggap mereka demikian.
Mas Dhita yang sebelumnya juga pernah mengeditori bukuku yang berjudul “Andai Salju Turun di Indonesia,” lewat penerbit yang sama, memberikan contoh tokoh-tokoh dunia yang dulunya sempat dianggap bodoh, di antaranya Albert Einstein dan Aristotle Onassis. Dibenakku langsung terbayang Richard Branson, idolaku, pemilik Virgin Airways yang nyentrik. Sebab aku pernah membaca kisah tentangnya yang menyebutkan bahwa di masa kecilnya ia sempat dianggap bodoh akibat disleksia, yang menyebabkannya kesulitan membaca dan lamban dalam menyerap pelajaran.
Seperti kata salah seorang tokoh yang juga kutulis di buku ini, Winston S. Churchill, “Writing a book is an adventure,” aku pun langsung bertualang, menjelajah ke berbagai sumber yang bisa dijadikan referensi untuk membuka wawasan, baik dengan cara membaca buku-buku di perpustakaan, membeli beberapa buku yang berkaitan dengan tokoh yang akan ditulis, menonton film tentang tokoh-tokoh tersebut, termasuk film-film dokumenter tentang mereka. Wah, aku sempat terharu dan menitikkan air mata saat menonton film dokumenter tentang Louis Brailler. Ia tokoh yang benar-benar inspiratif.
Aku baru tersadar, ternyata banyak sekali orang-orang sukses yang dulunya sempat tersisih, inferior, dan dianggap bodoh bahkan disangka idiot. Mereka berasal dari berbagai negara yang berbeda, mempunyai pengalaman yang berbeda, meskipun akhirnya mereka sukses meraih masa depan dan menjadi tokoh yang dipuja dunia. Proses yang meraka lalui untuk keluar dari stereotip ‘bodoh’ sangat menarik untuk ditampilkan. Aku kian yakin, dengan menulisnya, Insya Allah tujuan untuk memotivasi anak-anak Indonesia yang mengalami masalah di sekolah, kian terbuka.
Aku sangat percaya pada teori Howaard Gardner, tentang Multiple Intelligence atau kecerdasan majemuk. Gardner menegaskan bahwa setiap anak itu berbeda. Perbedaan inilah menjadikan setiap anak tidak mesti memiliki cita-cita yang seragam, karena setiap anak cerdas pada bidangnya masing-masing. Setiap anak dianugerahi potensi dan karakteristik kecerdasan yang unik. Jadi buku ini nantinya akan menegaskan bahwa setiap anak sangat berharga. Setiap dari mereka adalah istimewa.
Berbekal keyakinan itulah maka sangat lumrah jika di dunia ini kita kerap mendapati anak-anak yang tidak suka matematika. Kita seharusnya menganggap wajar jika tidak semua orang pandai matematika. Winston Churcill contohnya. Perdana menteri Inggris yang terkenal itu, sangat membenci matematika, tetapi justru sangat menyenangi sejarah dan bahasa Inggris. Ia sadar dengan potensinya, dan inilah yang ia gali. Berkat potensi itulah ia mendapat anugerah penghargaan Nobel atas sumbangan besarnya pada buku-bukunya yang berhubungan dengan bahasa Inggris dan sejarah dunia.
Steven Spielberg juga tokoh yang sangat menarik untuk ditulis. Ia kian menegaskan betapa setiap manusia terlahir disamping memiliki kekurangan masing-masing, juga dianugerahi potensi kelebihan masing-masing. Spielberg sendiri ternyata mempunyai kecenderungan memiliki kecerdasan visual, salah satu kecerdasan dari teori Multiple Intelligence.
Penjelajahan berikutnya adalah seorang tokoh yang sangat terkenal cerita masa kecilnya, yakni pernah dikeluarkan dari sekolah saking dianggap bodoh oleh gurunya. Siapa lagi kalau bukan Thomas Alfa Edison. Menariknya, Edison mampu mengejar ketertinggalannya sehingga menjadi orang yang genius dan menghasilkan penemuan demi penemuan. Rupanya orang tua, yakni ibunya, sangat berjasa mengantarkan kesuksesan Edison. Ibunyalah yang berperan sebagai pengganti guru-guru di sekolah ketika Edison “terusir” dari sekolah.
Peran orang tua merupakan pesan moral yang luar biasa. Peran tersebut tergambar kuat lewat tokoh dokter bedah syaraf yang sukses, Dr. Benjamin Carson atau yang semasa anak-anak dipanggil dengan nama kecil, Bennie. Ia pada awalnya dicap sebagai murid yang langganan berada pada urutan terbawah. Itu dikarenakan setiap menerima rapor, nilainya banyak dihiasi huruf “F”. Namun siapa yang menyangka di kemudian hari ia menjadi dokter bedah yang sukses. Baik orang tua Edison maupun Bennie mempunyai keyakinan bahwa tak ada anak yang bodoh, yang ada hanya anak yang kurang rajin belajar dan setiap anak mempunyai potensi tertentu untuk dikembangkan.
Nah, aku juga ingin berbagi cerita tentang anak-anak yang ditakdirkan memiliki kekurangan, namun berprestasi luar biasa. Sebagaimana tokoh menakjubkan, Louis Braille yang sudah aku singgung di atas. Dengan kekurangannya sebagai seorang tunanetra, ia mampu menciptakan huruf Braille yang terus digunakan hingga kini. Inspirasi yang sama juga pada komponis musik klasik ternama, Beethoven. Ia yang mengalami ketulian pada masa jayanya, tak menyerah. Ketulian yang menderanya tak menyurutkan semangatnya untuk berkarya. Ia pun tetap menghasilkan karya yang mendunia.
Pesan moral dari kedua tokoh ini adalah, meskipun tidak sempurna secara fisik, Braille dan Beethoven selalu berusaha menjadi manusia yang bermanfaat. Sebagaimana pula Albert Einstein, tokoh yang di masa kecilnya mengalami banyak masalah dan dianggap aneh karena sindrom asperger atau yang berkaitan dengan autism.
Louis Braille, Beethoven, dan Einstein di masa sekarang disebut sebagai anak-anak berkebutuhan khusus. Aku sendiri sejak lama sangat dekat dengan anak-anak berkebutuhan khusus termasuk anak autis. Sahabat-sahabatku yang memiliki rumah terapi untuk anak berkebutuhan khusus ini kerap menggundangku untuk berkunjung ke rumah terapi mereka. Di sinilah aku belajar mengenal mereka.
Berkat kedekatan dengan mereka, pada tahun 2012 aku sempat mendapatkan Juara II Lomba Menulis Jurnalistik Anak Berkebutuhan Khusus yang diselenggarakan oleh Kemendikbud Jakarta. Saat menerima penghargaan itu aku diinapkan di hotel berbintang di Bandung, bersama-sama dengan anak-anak berkebutuhan khusus. Saat itulah kesempatanku berinteraksi untuk lebih mengenal mereka. Aku akhirnya bersahabat dengan seorang anak tunanetra cantik yang pandai bernyanyi, Wiwin, yang bercita-cita menjadi Guru Pendidikan Luar Biasa. Alhamdulillah saat ini Wiwin tengah merintis cita-citanya dan sebentar lagi benar-benar akan menjadi seorang guru PLB!
Pada saat bersama mereka, tak kupungkiri aku mendapati energi positif. Semangat mereka menulariku. Nah, menuliskan kisah masa kecil peraih Nobel bidang fisika yang terkenal dengan teori relativitasnya, Albert Einstein, atau kisah Louis Braille dan Beethoven, mengingatkan kembali pada sahabat-sahabat berkebutuhan khusus yang aku kenal. Aku berharap jika buku ini rampung, buku ini menjadi salah satu buku yang memotivasi mereka agar mampu mengenali potensi diri sebagaimana Einstein, Braille, dan Beethoven.
Di sisi lain, kita tak dapat menutup mata akan fenomena menakutkan, di mana banyak orang tua mengeluh dan kewalahan menahan keinginan anaknya untuk bermain games di laptop, dan hp termasuk games online yang kian mewabah. Banyak anak-anak penggila games menjadi tak pernah perduli dengan pelajaran di sekolahnya. Top Ittipat contohnya, hampir seluruh waktunya ia habiskan untuk bermain games online. Begitu pula dengan Adam Khoo.
Fatalnya di sekolah pun ketika gurunya sedang menerangkan pelajaran, ia sempatkan bermain games. Namun, Top Ittipat mempunyai kisah inspirastif karena berhasil keluar dari jeratan penggila games dan menjadi pengusaha muda yang sukses. Begitu pula Adam Khoo, yang dulunya dicap sebagai anak bodoh berubah menjadi anak genius yang pintar. Kemampuannya mengubah keyakinan negatif dalam dirinya menjadi keyakinan positif patut diketahui anak-anak penyuka games, agar mereka menyadari tugas utama mereka sebagai pelajar. Mereka pun bisa berubah menjadi kebanggan orang tua mereka jika mau berusaha.
Menghimpun tokoh sukses dunia yang dulunya dianggap bodoh dalam sebuah tulisan bukan berarti tak ada kendala. Tantangan utamanya, bagaimana menyajikan buku ini dengan menarik agar tidak membosankan. Tak dipungkiri beberapa tokoh ini pernah ditulis di internet. Namun sekali lagi, tantangannya adalah bagaimana mengupasnya dengan gaya yang berbeda dan mengolah ceritanya dengan menarik.
Menurutku, aku harus menemukan titik menarik dalam setiap individu, itulah yang nantinya ditonjolkan. Kemudian, memulai setiap cerita dengan gaya yang berbeda. Setiap tokoh diusahakan diulas dengan alur berbeda dan ending yang berbeda. Upaya ini tentu saja harus dilakukan agar semua tokoh terlihat menarik dan tidak membosankan.
Beberapa anak yang aku temui dalam survei kecil-kecilan menuturkan bahwa yang mereka sukai adalah buku cerita yang terdapat tokoh ‘superhero-nya”, atau menurut bahasa mereka “ada perkelahiannya.” Nah, bagaimana menjadikan buku ini meskipun sebuah buku biografi namun jika membacanya selayaknya tengah membaca seorang ‘superhero’ adalah tantangan lainnya.
Selain itu, diperlukan kehati-hatian agar anak-anak tetap berpikiran bahwa pendidikan di sekolah adalah hal utama. Mengapa demikian? Richard Branson dan Bill Gates adalah contoh miliarder yang berhasil, namun tidak menyelesaikan sekolahnya alias drop out. Jangan sampai anak-anak ini berpikiran salah dengan mengatakan, “Tuh, Bill Gates saja putus sekolah, tetapi bisa sukses!”
Nah, Bill Gates memang tidak menyelesaikan kuliahnya alias DO dari Harvard University. Namun ia memilih alasan yang kuat, yakni untuk berkonsentrasi pada Microsoft. Bill yakin, bahwa ia harus keluar dari kuliah demi menekuni program yang ia temukan. Namun, ada rahasia kesuksesan Bill yang perlu diketahui anak-anak adalah kegemarannya membaca buku di perperpustakaan. Bill Gates bahkan mengakui bahwa rajin membaca adalah salah satu rahasia kesuksesannya.
Bill Gates pernah menegaskan pendapatnya mengenai pendidikan, dalam salah satu kunjungannya ke Jakarta. Ia mengatakan bahwa semua anak harus menyelesaikan pendidikan dan agar para mahasiswa tidak meniru dirinya yang DO di tengah jalan. “Selesaikan kuliah Anda dan raihlah gelar akademis. Jangan tinggalkan bangku sekolah,” ujarnya memastikan. Itulah sebabnya, perlu penegasan di tulisan ini bahwa sangatlah penting bagi kita untuk tahu pemikiran Bill Gates. Meski DO, ia menegaskan bahwa anak-anak harus tetap mengutamakan pendidikan di sekolah.

Akhirnya draf tulisan tokoh-tokoh sukses yang dulunya sempat dianggap bodoh ini selesai. Namun sebelum menyerahkan draf naskah ini kepada editor, aku butuh waktu untuk mengendapannya. Setelah proses pengendapan, biasanya saat membacanya kembali selalu ada saja kalimat atau kata-kata yang terlihat kurang pas, dan perlu proses penyuntingan. Itu memang standar tahapan yang selalu aku lakukan sebelum menyetorkan draf naskah final kepada editor.
Aku sempat liburan sejenak dengan mengunjungi seorang teman di sebuah country town di Victoria (Melbourne) bernama Lakes Entrance. Tak lupa dalam setiap perjalanan travelling ke mana pun, aku selalu membawa teman setiaku, notebook, yang berisi draf naskah. Sebab adakalanya menunggu jadwal penerbangan atau saat waktu luang di mana saja selalu kumanfaatkan untuk membaca dan menyempurnakan kembali draf tulisanku.
Pada saat travelling kali ini aku justru menemukan tambahan pengalaman yang kian membuka wawasan tentang sistem pendidikan yang baik bagi anak-anak. Siena, anak temanku yang selalu terlihat ceria, kerap bercerita apa saja dengan riang, menarik perhatianku sejak awal bertemu. Ia tengah membuat keterampilan saat aku tiba di rumahnya, dengan menggunakan kertas, lem, gunting dan pernak pernik untuk ditempel. Siena yang duduk di kelas 1 SD itu kemudian memberikan salah satu hasil karyanya kepadaku, dengan menuliskan namaku di atasnya, “To Aunty Iin.” Sambutan selamat datang yang manis.
Kemudian mamanya Siena berkisah bahwa minggu lalu Siena mendapat sertifikat semacam pemberian penghargaan karena dianggap tulisan tangannya mulai rapi. Kedua orang tuanya dihadirkan ketika Siena dipanggil di depan sekolah untuk mendapatkan penghargaan atau school awards tersebut.
Ketika aku tanyakan lebih lanjut tujuan penghargaan kepada siswa, ternyata di sekolah Siena kerap ada pemberian reward (penghargaan) atas usaha dan prestasi siswanya. Penghargaan atas prestasi berupa apresiasi atas sikap baik dan prestasi peningkatan akademis mereka. Misalnya karena kian hari lebih pandai membaca, tulisannya lebih rapi, karena menolong teman yang terjatuh, dan lain-lain. Wah terlihat sekali betapa mereka lebih mengutamakan pengembangan karakter (character building) dan kecerdasan emosi anak-anak didiknya. Usaha apa pun yang dilakukan anak-anak tersebut selalu dihargai. Keren ya?
Penasaran dengan sistem pendidikan di Aussie, keesokan harinya aku ikut mengantar dan menjemput Siena di sekolah. Aku menemukan jawaban mengapa Siena terlihat sangat riang meskipun baru saja pulang sekolah. Sama sekali tak terlihat kelelahan dan beban di wajahnya. Jawabannya aku dapati ketika berada di ruang kelasnya. Suasana kelas sangat welcome, tidak sepi, tidak tegang. Dinding kelas hingga ke plafon dipenuhi, ditempeli, dan digantung dengan berbagai macam hasil karya anak-anak didik baik berupa gambar, tulisan, maupun kerajinan tangan.
Singkatnya, terlihat sekali mereka tidak dibebani dengan pelajaran yang berat. Bobot tingkat kesulitan materi pelajaran tidaklah berat. Aku berkesimpulan, untuk tingkat dasar seperti Siena saja masih ditekankan pendidikan karakter. Tentulah bisa dibayangkan sistem pendidikan taman kanak-kanaknya, pastilah jauh lebih menyenangkan karena lebih bebas bermain dan lebih diarahkan pada pengembangan kreativitas.
Tidak mustahil, sistem pendidikan seperti ini tidak lagi menciptakan anak-anak yang tertekan secara akademik. Mereka akan lebih siap karena didahului dengan pendidikan karakter yang kuat. Aku yakin sistem seperti ini akan memperkecil anak-anak yang merasa bodoh atau merasa inferior. Barangkali di kesempatan lain aku akan menulis buku dalam bentuk cerita anak-anak yang bertujuan mengembangkan karakter, hehehe.

Sepulang dari travelling dan setelah penyempurnaan beberapa kalimat yang masih kuanggap kurang pas, aku setorkan draf yang diminta Mas Dhita. Bismillah. Aku bersyukur draf naskah ini tak terlalu banyak revisi. Naskah ini akhirnya benar-benar tampil menjadi sebuah buku di awal tahun 2016 dengan judul “20 TOKOH SUKSES DUNIA YANG DULUNYA DIANGGAP BODOH,” kado awal tahun yang manis.
Aku tinggal berdoa semoga buku ini benar-benar bisa memotivasi anak-anak sebagaimana niat awalnya, terutama kepada anak-anak yang memang mempunyai permasalahan dalam nilai akademiknya. Pun, bagi orang tua, semoga buku ini menjadi referensi bahwa setiap anak memiliki keistimewaan, dan keberhasilan seorang anak bukan diukur pada pelajaran tertentu. Dibutuhkan peran orang tua membantu anak-anak dalam mengoptimalkan potensi anak-anak mereka.
Terakhir, bukan berarti tak penting namun jutru memegang peran utama dalam terwujudnya buku ini adalah peran editor, Mas Ditha, dan ilustrator, Mas Bayu.
